Course Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

•  Gain a better understanding of trends in stroke prevention and management

•  Describe the nursing role in the care and management of stroke patients

•  Identify the major risk factors for developing stroke and discuss nursing interventions to minimize or prevent these risk factors

•  Know the clinical presentation of stroke patients

•  Describe the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of stroke

•  Develop a teaching plan for patients with stroke including a comprehensive review of medications

•  Describe the major complications of stroke and identify strategies to prevent these complications

•  Develop a sustainable program for managing stroke patients

Overview/Description

In the United States, stroke kills almost 130,000 individuals each year. On average, a person dies from stroke every 4 minutes. With the prevalence of stroke in today’s society, it is important to understand the proper ways to prevent or care for it in order for individuals to continue their daily lives. The right care at the right time can be the difference between life and death. Understanding Stroke provides an overview on what stroke is and how to determine the symptoms of one, how it affects people, and how to prevent stroke or care for people who have experienced one.
