Surviving Dementia

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

•  Gain a better understanding of how dementia affects the healthcare industry and medical field as a whole

•  Identify the major risk factors for developing dementia and discuss nursing interventions to minimize or prevent these risk factors

•  Know the clinical presentation of dementia patients

•  Describe the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of dementia

•  Describe the nursing management of dementia patients

•  Develop a teaching plan for patients with dementia including a comprehensive review of medications

•  Describe the major complications of dementia and identify strategies to prevent these complications

•  Identify patients with worsening signs and symptoms requiring hospital admission

•  Develop a plan of care with a focus on enhancing memory, addressing fundamental needs, and improving quality of life

Overview/Description

The brain is the center of activity for all individuals, allowing us to carry out ordinary day to day tasks as well as create works of brilliance. Dementia causes a decline in mental ability and memory. And while this general category of diseases mainly affects older people, it is not a normal part of aging. Proper care when dealing with dementia can make the patient’s life and the caretaker’s life much easier. Surviving Dementia provides an overview of the different types of dementia, the causes of dementia, as well as the various methods to treat and care for dementia.
